Conflict in relationships can lead to responses in the body such as inflammation, changes in appetite and increased release of stress hormones, all of which can affect aspects of health ranging from heart function to the immune system. It can affect someone's health negatively if spouses are hostile or defensive during disagreements or if they are arguing about the same topic over and over again without any resolution.

What are your thoughts on the article? Do you agree with it? Is a bad marriage detrimental to one's health?

I would think that having a bad marriage affects you psychologically because of all the stress. If you're stressed, everything follows.

Frequent fighting takes a toll not only on your health but also on your relationships. It would be hard to focus on tasks if you're distracted.

I haven't been married for long but I can believe what the article is saying. In the early stage of our marriage, my husband and I have been fighting a lot. The fights were just stressing us down physically, friends would really notice how bad my skin was during that time. If the effect of those few months of toxic relationship can already have an impact on my skin, I bet effects would be much worse if the problem dragged out.

Ditto to this. When I was in a bad marriage, my heart literally fell in pain. Now that I am out of it, I feel more alive and office mates say I have a look of glow on my face.

This is soo true! Sometimes people don't have to have the stigma of a failed marriage and soldier on but it's much braver to know when to give up.

I disagree! Yes a bad marriage is bad for you and your health but it doesn't mean you should give up. Seek counselling or help to improve the communication in the relationship because often times, the reason behind a bad marriage is miscommunication.

I don't think it's limited to bad marriage. Bad relationships too can be unhealthy.

Unhappy marriages, for obvious reasons, make stress worse. You worry about everything especially if you always have fights.

If you are unhappily married, it’s not just your physical health that suffers. Unhappily married people also suffer from lower self-esteem and higher psychological distress than their happily married counterparts.

I believe this. You'd lose your sense of purpose when you are in a bad marriage and this can take a toll on your mental, physical and emotional health.

When you feel like you’re stuck in a bad marriage, you get depressed. Walking on eggshells all the time contributes to anxiety. When your spouse constantly belittles you, or you feel like a loser because your marriage is a wreck, your self-esteem takes a huge hit. In short, marriage can wreak havoc in your emotional and psychological life.
