JASON Smith founded his own physio company out of his garage at the age of 24.

Today, the Back In Motion Health Group is a thriving $50 million business with 100 locations and a 600-strong team.

But Mr Smith says that phenomenal growth really came down to his decision to ban one simple thing — forever.

Back in 2013, the Melbourne father-of-four noticed something worrying about the business he had built up from scratch.

Staff were being “drained of creativity”, and were too worried about speaking out of turn to flag important problems they noticed during their working day.

Mr Smith realised it was happening because workers were being “pigeonholed” by their job titles, and felt too restricted to speak out about issues outside their usual responsibilities.

So he banned them — overnight.https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/other-industries/aussie-physio-company-doubles-in-size-after-banning-job-descriptions-and-titles/news-story/b1aea581d16502256128d5ed72559398

Job titles can both motivate and demotivate employees, depending on what their title is. So there's merit to both keeping and scrapping it. Some people may bemotivated to do more and achieve more in order to get a promotion and earn a different title, while others may see them as unnecessary labels

What difference do job titles make? Are they really necessary in the workplace?

No, just another yank fad that will fade away... Many other companies tried this in the early-mid '00s. It's the same rubbish as open plan layouts and standing desks.

"It's all window dressing. Companies that proclaim to have a flat structure where everyone is equal and has no job title or description, it's all a bunch of marketing nonsense.

At the end of the day you might have removed the titles, but not the removal of responsibilities. There might not be a CEO by title, but someone who has the CEO role and makes high level decisions being paid a CEO salary.

If titles truly were removed everyone would be paid the same salary because the titles are gone. Just because they're not used doesn't mean on paper they're not still around. I guarantee people are being paid differently to one another the CEO isn't being paid the same as everyone else.

In other words, it's just another new wave employment fad like open plan offices, beer kegs and ping pong tables. Just more rhetoric companies can put on their careers page to try and differentiate themselves from the market."

Would be interesting at a FairWork hearing … 'they owe me $X, I wasn't just a cleaner, I was a creative director'.

"Interesting...shame their careers page advertises positions with a title and details that look very much like a position description."

It would be hard to find a job ad that isn’t “listing the sorts of skills that would normally be needed to fill a particular role." I would have thought.
