Ronaldo and Messi have both won five times but the Barcelona and Argentina forward was overlooked with Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah in contention.
Barcelona and Argentina forward Messi was featured in the top three for 11 straight years and he was runner-up in 2007 and 2008 before winning the title for the first of five years in 2009. The shortlists were announced by football’s world governing body on Monday and the award ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 24 at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Do you think it's unfair that Messi was overlooked? Do you believe Cristiano Ronaldo can set a record by winning his sixth title and does he deserve it?

This can't be real! Messi is one awesome athlete! He's way better than Ronaldo. It would be great to see who wins if he's in the running!

Ronaldo still remains a frontrunner to win the award despite Portugal's early World Cup exit at the hands of Uruguay, but his move to Juventus has signaled his intent to still establish himself as the greatest of all-time ahead of Messi.

Messi is still the best in the world, and is definitely more deserving of The Best FIFA Men's Player prize than Ronaldo, who had a poor start to the 2017/18 campaign.

I'm not sure there's ever been a player who's has scored close to or over a goal a game for 9 out of 10 seasons in Europe's top leagues like Ronaldo did between 2007-17. In that same time frame, he achieved the same feat in 8 out of 10 CL campaigns. It doesn't hurt that he's hot too! Haha

WTH?! Messi scored 45 goals and assisted a further 18 strikes in 54 matches for Barca last season, while Ronaldo struck 44 times and set up eight goals in 44 games for Real in the same campaign.

Let's not forget the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric and Antoine Griezmann are among the emerging talents in Russia and favourites to win the Ballon d'Or. Who knows someone might win it this year.

I agree! I honestly can't see how anyone can say Ronaldo is a better player.

I was just saying that, IMO, for most of his Real career Ronaldo has been forced to play more as an individual and work harder for his goals because of the way Real play. Latterly, he’s probably scoring more tap ins because he’s getting on a bit. In a team like Barca, who pass you to death and create more opportunities he maybe would’ve scored more. We’ll never know..

He's a fantastic footballer in the top 2 of his generation. No arguments there but can't be classed as naturally gifted. It's just my opinion though.

Fair enough mate. I’d definitely say it’s the opposite though. He hasn’t been able to dribble well for years so he really needs that service he gets. Goal tallies are mental either way.

IMO Messi is the best ever. Pele Maradonna and Cruyff all better than Ronaldo.

That's BS! Messi doesn't have to score to have a good game. That's how good a player he is.
