Problems of Volunteer Tourism

Volunteer trips can actually do more harm than good. In this video, Warchild USA Founder Dr. Samantha Nutt explains why this is the case. According to Dr. Nutt, reports from Haiti and Cambodia say that orphanages offering volunteering experiences for tourists have been accused of keeping conditions deliberately bleak so that visitors will feel compelled to give more.

Friends-International’s 3PC Cambodia initiative (Partnership Program for the Protection of Children) in collaboration with Unicef Cambodia is working to tackle this issue by creating an alliance of 50 child welfare and protection organizations across Cambodia.

It's bullshit is what it is. I hate people who do these things to go snap some pictures with some poor children to increase their social media bragging rights/college application credit.

What do you suggest they all do? Donate money that then never gets to the people? C'mon! Tell us....

I've volunteered in Ecuador but it wasn't with children, we were focusing on the environment and sustainability. by no means did i go on this trip to have bragging rights, or college cred, i did it because i genuinely wanted to and its something i care about. you cant just assume everybody is travelling and actually making a difference because of selfish reasons.

The system isn't designed to fix anything, only sustain it. What these charities do is a multi million dollar + industry, they're running businesses not charities. Pray for the healing of people in these types of organisations.

Give the man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach the man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Every little bit helps.

Now this is garbage media. This might be a problem In a couple places but there are plenty of not for profits that do a ton and help spread awareness in the states when people get back and share what they saw. Another crappy story from now this showing one point of view.

I feel some frustration over here. The only NGOs that really help now all require a degree in humanitarian work to be hired. Everyone is building schools in parts of the world were people starve or die at 10yo from a flu. Most of the time, the whole village move into the school to live as it's the only decent building in the area.

This is 100% true!!! Stop doing it! It's condescending and pointless!!! As a person for color who does go on missions to be a part of existing teams I see these groups from time to time, and they are definitely on vacation. Not cool! Stop doing it. It does not help at all!
