The smartphone has become a universal safety blanket that we desperately cling to while waiting for our companion at a restaurant or in line for our prescription at the pharmacy. We’re all guilty of this behaviour, but why do we do it?

Social media designed to connect people is actually damaging relationships both on and off-line. Take a moment to think about your everyday life and the conversations you have with those around you. How often would you say your conversations are interrupted? Everyone has experienced the awkward pause that occurs when someone reads a text message mid-conversation. It’s awkward and rude, yet has become totally acceptable.

Is the internet and social media making us anti-social? Does the internet make our relationships better or worse?

Social media has become our primary form of communication. It’s easier and more convenient to look someone up on Facebook than physically stay in touch with him or her or calling on the phone.

As we become more socially connected with the rest of the world, we are becoming more disconnected from each other. We are losing sight of the little things around us, because we’re so focused on the latest YouTube video, or Buzz Feed article on our phones.

None of us can criticize technology or social media outright. We have the option to log off and unplug anytime we want, so it’s up to us to decide if we want to engage with the actual world or the virtual one.

I am guilty of this. I chat quite a lot with family and friends instead of calling them.

Our phones allow us to connect with the people we give a crap about, even if we only care about those people in a petty or intrusively curious way. Seeing a picture of a high school nemesis and obsessively texting your friends to see whether anyone knows if that guy in the picture is her boyfriend or not is still more productive than making small talk with strangers.

With Internet access spreading throughout the globe, it has never been easier to work, research, communicate, and connect with people everywhere right from our fingertips. So it’s not the technology that’s the problem; it’s us for abusing it. We’ve become antisocial by relying on technology too heavily.

We use social media because it’s fun, because we like it, because we’re social creatures. We use it because it keeps us occupied and entertained.

Instead of counting the number of likes, people should count the memories in their lives because at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

Restaurants are full of people more interested in the pixels on their electronic devices than those around them. Kids are watching TV episodes, parents are scrolling through emails, and even waiters are texting during a free moment between orders. That's the effect of the internet on people now.

I’ve seen a couple sitting across from each other, where both people were playing separate video games on their iPhones. Maybe the date went sour, I don’t know, but it was as if they couldn’t be further apart even though they were physically so close together.

Technology doesn’t ruin face-to-face interaction. In fact, when you look at social media, a lot of the content that people post involve other people. We want to capture birthday outings and crazy nights and happy occasions and emotional moments.

It gets annoying when your friend asks you out and they spend 90% of their time on their smartphones.
