Here's how a magician thinks:
1. Magicians start the planning process by first envisioning their act’s ultimate wow moment where something “impossible” happens. Then we work backward to identify and craft the pieces needed to bring about this effect. No amount of preparation is too much.
2. Stay at least one step ahead of the spectator is a magic fundamental rule.
3. The more important your objective is to you, the more important it is that you load up carefully on your plans.
4. Keep close track of your audiences to safeguard the element of surprise. Use your memory to help you develop the relationships that matter most to you, while safeguarding yourself against those that are dangerous.
5. If you want to command your audience, use all legitimate tools at your disposal. Always research your potential employer or employee, clients, colleagues or interviewer. Mind the gap between what your audience thinks you know and what you actually know, and use your insights to awe them but not reveal anything that might compromise your advantage.

The hardest thing to do is thinking of the ultimate wow. Sometimes, the ultimate wow you think of is what your peers are thinking of as well. That's the same in magic, we are not wow'd by all the acts we see.

This is a good analogy to make. Maybe I can be a magician. I follow these steps at work and yes, I am ahead of my peers.

Staying one step ahead is always a must especially if there's tough competition. You need to really be creative in finding ways to be a step ahead everyone else.

I agree. The wow factor is the hard part. There are people who have really high expectations.

True. You need to remember it's what they want that counts. Satisfying your boss and the customers is always number one.
