S.P.A.R.K. is a charity focused on helping kids find the S.P.A.R.K. that leads towards a fulfilling life. We recognize that young people today are under increasing amounts of pressure and stress from many different sources. In these circumstances it is easier to lose your SPARK for life. We provide young people an opportunity to interact for a day, week, month or longer with all types of passionate professionals who love what they are doing and want to share their S.P.A.R.K..
This discussion is set to be extendable. After it expires, the content will remain, but all guests will be removed. After that if any guests decide to join it, more days will be added to the discussion

Our programmes and initiatives benefit both kids and professionals alike. Professionals benefit too by gaining useful insights from today's youth. Professionals from any industry can share their experience and understanding with kids for any length of time from 2 hours to 2 years. They get to encourage resilient young people and gain unique insights from the next generation.
Kids can meet interesting, passionate professionals and experience first-hand what motivates them and ignites their S.P.A.R.K. for life. This friendship can be a great support and may open many doors in the future.

I get the gist of what it is that you do, and it all sounds really great, but how do you go about assigning the kids to the professionals and finding the most appropriate fit?

We try to adopt a give-and-take approach where all parties can equally benefit from the programmes. Using our database of volunteers, we match interested kids up with professionals who want to share their knowledge and passion for life. In this way, kids have the opportunity to gain inspiration from multiple occupations in a real life setting, and professionals gain insight and viewpoints from the next generation. Some of our key skills exchanges occur in the areas of Construction, Home Business, Tradesman, IT and Web Design, Resources and Health Care.

I love this! Some studies have shown that employers often lean towards hiring job-seekers that have some sort of experience in the field, i.e through an internship programme or an initiative such as this, simply because it reassures them that the candidate is certain that this is what they want to do.

I’m not a certified teacher or anything, but I’ve done my share of tutoring and grading homework for teachers. I loved every aspect of it!

What is your role as an organisation in facilitating the process in terms of study materials, etc?

S.P.A.R.K. provides conversation guides and questionnaires to help the kids and professionals navigate the introduction and learning process. The first step to finding a sponsor is meeting up. If the professional and the young person decide they want to learn more together it can expand into a longer relationship.

Brilliant, kids really need something like this because it allows them to personally see and experience different situations, procedures and methods, and scenarios, as opposed to simply reading about it from other peoples’ experiences.

This sounds like something I would do, however, I am a bit worried about the amount of commitment that world be required from my side in terms of hours. How much time should volunteers be willing to dedicate to the programme?

The amount of time you spend is entirely up to you. You can participate only once for a few hours or you can make it a weekly routine.

Sounds great! It takes me back to my days as a tutor in varsity.

Me too! I love the thinking behind this initiative because I personally learned so much from my time as an assistant lecturer and tutor, and I think this is quite similar.
