Why Bother With Marriage?

It’s tempting to think of marriage as old fashioned. Why not just live with someone and be done with it? What need for a public ceremony? Why the weird traditions that people normally keep away from: all those churches, temples, hymns, vows and prayers? Marriage must be a silly relic from the religious childhood of humankind, not designed for the more logical modern world.

And yet it survives.

The essence of marriage is to tie our hands, to frustrate our wills, to put high and costly obstacles in the way of splitting up. Why do we do this?https://www.huffpost.com/entry/why-bother-with-marriage_b_592c4571e4b08861ed0ccb20

Marriage is not for everyone. I truly believe that there are people who enter marriage thinking to keep it long term but it takes more than love and trust to keep it going. The commitment and the desire to make it work should always be present no matter what.

There are legal benefits to being married. It isn't required to go along with a big ceremony, reception and party. When you know you want to share the rest of your life with someone and both are comitted to keep working on the relation even when circumstances are though, sure, why not get married and get the legal benefits?

I have come to accept that marriage is like food: It has a shelf life during which it is nourishing and after which it is toxic. Perhaps if Marriage is entered into with the understanding that all marriages end in one of the three Ds: Divorce, Discontent, or Death, then couples would more likely to enjoy a fulfilling marriage. Maybe instead of anniversary celebrations, couples should have marriage renewal ceremonies - an annual opt in if you will- to say why the should continue to be married instead of just going on as friends. After all, if you have gotten to know each other so much that there is nothing left to learn; if all the spark is gone; if the children have become independent from the marriage or perplexed by it, what's the point of going on?

For me, marriage is like a walk in the park... Jurassic Park. 😂

I'd rather be single and miserable than married and miserable.
