People love eating junk food even if they're unhealthy. Burgers are fries are some of the most common unhealthiest foods but are the most sought after in fastfood joints. Ever wondered why this happens?

We crave unhealthy food because of the sugar and additives that make it taste great. That triggers a release of certain pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters. We are evolutionary programmed to eat a lot more than we need and that makes it worse. Believe it or not, a huge number of people crave junk foods.

Do consumers really have freedom of choice with regards to what they eat? What can policymakers learn from corporations in nudging consumers toward healthier behaviors?

Junk food is typically cheap, processed and prepackaged, making it easily available. I'm guilty of this.

Convenience becomes a habit and eventually a perceived necessity to keep up with such a fast-paced society. Disrupting that routine requires an investment of time, and most people prefer to stick with the faster option.

Busy schedules often diminish the amount of time people have to prepare healthy, nutritious meals, so they opt for faster, easier options. Whole foods such as vegetables and meat take time and kitchen equipment to cook properly, while fast food hamburgers are usually served within minutes of ordering.

A result of this fast-paced culture is increased levels of stress and anxiety. Increased stress levels cause the body to expend more energy, stimulating hunger for calorie-dense sustenance and driving people to eat fatty, sugary junk food.

High levels of anxiety cause people to seek out junk food as a means of comfort. People look for ways to calm themselves, and junk food’s positive effects on the reward center of the brain make it a comforting go-to choice.

This happens to me sometimes. I crave french fries when I'm really tired.

People choose junk food because they have developed a mild physical dependence on it.

A lot of junk-food eaters consume their pseudo-foods of choice in order to self-soothe. Man-made foods are designed, sometimes with chemical additives and flavor enhancers, to satisfy in terms of flavor and texture, which stimulates ongoing consumption.

Foods can literally be addictive. Unfortunately, those are not the health-inducing ones.

Unhealthy food is addictive. Sugary sodas loaded with preservatives and unhealthy acids, chips with too much salt and sugar and palm oils, etc bring no nutritional support to the body so the brain says, keep eating! There are whole aisles full of unhealthy food in your average supermarket.

There is nothing wrong with eating at McDonald’s once a week but you should be worried if you eat there every single day. The same goes for every fast food chain.
